The Executioner
Syren Evetrill was designed to kill.
Genetically-engineered, in fact, the way all Executioners in the divided land of Pyre are. Wolf and nightingale together is a more deadly combination than you would think.
For ninety-eight years King Sirx has held power, instilling fear in the Lower Dominion with the Executions, where the condemned must face death at the savage hands of the Executioners. The rich and vain of the Upper District however, have nothing to fear and attend the Executions for entertainment and their fill of bloodshed.
Syren has been trained to kill ruthlessly since she was a child. She doesn’t feel kindness. She doesn’t offer mercy. And most of all, she doesn’t love.
But that changes when the Ninety-Eighth Executions throw Syren’s world out of balance. In them, the panther Syssic Varen all too quickly sees the true atrocity of the Upper District and refuses his own Executioner role. He’s different. Gentle. Syren’s only ally and the reason why her stone heart begins to beat. The reason why her eyes are no longer blind to the cruelty she helps to uphold. And Syssic becomes the only thing in Pyre that Syren has ever loved.
To free the Lower Dominion, Syren would defy the kingdom that created her. To protect Syssic, she would give her life. Together, the two Executioners plan to fight back against the cruelty and injustice of the system. But disobedience spawns swift punishment. They must avoid capture by the Faceless and their own execution condemnations. They must endure torture, betrayal, and the burden of being the sole protectors of thousands of lives. To take back Pyre and save themselves, Syren and Syssic must find a way to destroy the very essence of what they once were and finally put an end to the king’s dark reign.
